Fen was born into an artistic family in Peking (Beijing). However, having grown up during the Chinese Cultural Revolution, she did not initially pursue a career in art. Instead, she followed a business path, studying at Oxford Business College and later earning an MBA in Chicago, USA. She subsequently worked for several major global U.S. companies.

After her marriage to Sir John Aird, Fen gradually rekindled her interest in painting and has since continued to refine her artistic practice. While exploring a contemporary approach, she firmly believes that a strong foundation—particularly in drawing—is essential to becoming a skilled painter. To this end, she has devoted considerable time to drawing from life, and painting studying at the Royal Drawing School, Heatherleys School of Fine Art and The London Academy of Art etc.

She now continues to develop her portrait skills, striving constantly to improve as a painter. Her personal favourite masters include John Singer Sargent, Joaquín Sorolla, and Anders Zorn.
